Having retained almost all of his squad during the summer, most people believed Andrew King and his A-team would be celebrating promotion come May. Things don’t always go to plan though and a set-back on the first day of the season, saw the A-team lose to title rivals Coleshill. However this was soon put right the following week when King’s side thrashed Sutton Courtenay 20 – 0.
From then on they put together an impressive run of nine wins on the bounce, which included hard fought victories in the Reading Post Jubilee Cup and in the League Cup.
As the season entered the winter period their title hopes started to skid off the road. The distraction of cancelled fixtures and complacency had affected the team’s rhythm. A bad run of one win in seven saw the A’s crash out of both cups and left them hanging on to the coat tails of the other promotion contenders.
March became a very important month as the team had two tricky away fixtures, after securing a vital win at Coleshill, they lost to Faringdon, which meant that for the second season running the A’s could only finish third.
Some might say a disappointing end to the season from a team with so much potential. After knowing they were consigned to third, the team still went on to smash the goal scoring record in all 5 divisions with a tally of 110 goals.
A special mention to Callum Oakley, Chris Keys, Lee Marshall and Jamie Clarke whose displays this season were outstanding. As a wise old proverb once said things can only get better…
